Blackjack Edit: Why You Need Skills, More than Luck, to Outsmart the Casino

Blackjack is a game of chance and skill — but we best believe that skills are more critical for winning than luck. This card game uses the standard 52 decks of cards that are distributed randomly, confirming that this game relies on chance. The game requires each player to beat the dealer and other players. To win, the player must build a hand equal to or as close as possible to 21.

What Makes Blackjack a Game of Skill

Players often use blackjack strategy charts to determine what the best move is for their cards compared to the dealer’s hand. Another effective strategy for blackjack is card counting — counting the cards is an ultimate skill because not everyone has been taught how to do it, which puts the odds in your favor.

What is Card Counting?

The blackjack strategy is going to make you want to thank your math teacher from middle school. It consists of a mathematical system that reaps better odds. It’s based on the idea that players benefit from high-value cards (King, Queen, Jack, Aces, and 10), whereas dealers benefit from low-value cards (2, 3, 4, 5, and 6). The 7, 8, and 9 in blackjack are labeled as neutral cards as their value is neither high nor low.

For each game, the low cards match the high cards in play. But, the ratio is likely to change after the first round. As the cards are being dealt, you want to determine the change to understand what’s left in the pack. If the first deal of cards consists of a majority of high-value cards, the next round shall be low-value cards and vice versa.

What Makes Blackjack Less of a Game of Luck

Even though you have been equipped with a great blackjack strategy, a little bit of luck goes a long way in blackjack.  This is because despite knowing the cards being used for the round and the ratio for each, the cards you shall be dealt with remain uncertain. This makes it partially a game of luck. You benefit from a pack consisting of high-value cards as the dealer benefits from low-value cards, so begin by increasing your wager for better payouts.
